Those two facts — the plant and the date — are the car's point of origin. Everything else about the vehicle happens after them: it ships, it sells, it changes hands, it accumulates history. What the VIN itself tells you, and what it doesn't

The VIN is not silent about origin. The eleventh character of a standard 17-digit VIN is the plant code — the manufacturer's identifier for the assembly facility — and the tenth character encodes the model year. So a VIN alone gets you into the neighborhood: a plant code and a model-year letter, decodable without any archive at all.

But the model year is not the build date, and a plant code is not a plant name until you resolve it. A car with a model-year designation can be built months before or into that calendar year; the VIN's year character tells you the model designation, not the day the line finished it. The actual build date — the date the factory recorded the car as assembled — lives in the OEM build record, not in the decode. That is the difference between "this is a 2023 model built at plant J" and "this serial number was recorded built on this date at this named plant." The first is decode. The second is the record.

Reading plant and build date from the record

The build record posts origin in its own section, alongside the rest of the as-built data:

The build block is the origin block. The assembly plant names where the car was put together; the build date states when the factory recorded it built; and the port of entry, where the record holds it, marks where an imported car cleared. Each line posts with its value, its source, and its timestamp — you see not just the fact but where it came from and when it was read.

And the honest part: where the OEM record does not hold one of these fields, the page says so — reported, not yet verified — rather than manufacturing a plant or a date to fill the row. Coverage varies by make, by era, and by how much of an archive is available for a given VIN. Older vehicles and some manufacturers carry thinner records than late-model mainstream brands. The page states what it has and marks what it doesn't. A blank is a result, not a defect to paper over.

Why the build date and plant are worth having

Origin facts do real work. The build date sets the true starting line for a car's age — useful when a model-year designation flatters or understates how long the car has actually existed, and useful for reading warranty and recall timelines that run from build, not from sale. The plant matters when a make runs the same model down more than one line, or when a particular facility and build window is tied to a known equipment change or a running production revision. For an appraiser or a remarketer, "built at this plant on this date" is a fact you can cite; a guess at the build year from the model designation is not.
